The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L II is certainly an improvement over its predecessor but it's not a new world wonder either. Resolution-wise it is tack sharp in the image center. At f/2-f/2.8 it is pushing the 50mp sensor of Canon EOS 5Ds R to its limits. However, the borders aren't quite so hot especially at large apertures.

Oct 31, 2019. I'm thinking about replace my old 35/2.0 (no is, slow and noisy focus) with one of two lenses: used 35/1.4L or new RF 35/1.8. 35L is faster, waterproof and can be used with my DLSR. RF version is much lighter, native for EOS, has IS and macro capabilities. The price is much the same.

The original Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 remains as a superb lens for everything at a bargain price with magnificent optics and fast autofocus, but lacks the faster f/1.4 speed, 9-blade diaphragm and image stabilization of this new lens.
