1. Weak Battery If your Mondeo’s engine won’t crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is a weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery.
I have a Mk III 2.0 TDCi with 109000 on the clock. Bit slower than normal to start for the last couple of weeks and today while I was doing 30mph the engine died. Managed to get in to the side and up on curb. She won't start. Glow plug illuminates and extinguishes normally but flashes while I try to start the engine

The car is a Ford Mondeo 1.6 Edge on a 57 plate. Mondeo 2008 1.8 Diesel Titanium X Fuel gauge drops as normal to 1/4 full and comp reads 100 miles approx to empty The test is to disconnect all the electrical drives to the injectors and also disconnect the electrical connection to IMV. This causes the IMV to be fully open. If you now crank the engine you should see >1050bar. Unfortunately I still don't see any pressure, although I do see the occasional pressure blip but not for long enough to start the car. this happened to me once. it was a broken engine earth strap (hopefully because its quick and cheap). connect test lamp (better still multimeter reading volts) to positive battery terminal then other end to a chassis earth ie: top of suspension leg. check reading. then to positive terminal and engine block to check engine is earthing correctly. if not check for a broken or corroded engine 2. Motor's faulty. To prove the relay, connect a voltmeter + to the solenoid terminal and - to earth - turn the key and you should get 12v on the meter. If no volts it could be the relay contacts. Disclaimer - only attempt this if you are 100% sure of what you are doing else get a motor sparky to do it.
Here are some of the most common warning signs of a bad timing belt on the Ford Mondeo: 1. Engine Won’t Start. If your Mondeo’s timing chain or belt has fallen off completely, broken, or has jumped a few teeth, it is entirely possible that the engine won’t even start.

I stuck the battery back in and she fired up and ran for maybe a minute and then died. I then did a little research here and found that the 90 bhp mk3 doesn't Tdci-Peter. Unfortunately there is no answer there yet, and a different engine (1.4TDCI), but it is the same problem. The 1.8TDCI is very sensitive to air in the fuel system. Once air gets to the main pump, then it will not start, nor suck the air through very easily. Leaks in the fuel filter or pipes can do this. IJOn7.
